The Matrix Poster
The Matrix was a great movie on many levels. It is kinetic, atmospheric, visually exciting, and thought provoking. It meshes the boundaries between reality and fantasy through placing the characters in a future horror where robots rule the earth. These robots have created a reality for us humans to live in as they use us for their energy source. Of course no one knows this fact, but the main character (Keanu Reeves) has a suspicion that something is going on.

Neo, who is a hacker of sorts, is dissatisfied with his existence, and while trying to flub his way through his life, he is contacted by a mysterious computer presence. “Wake up Neo,” says his monitor. “The Matrix has you. Follow the white rabbit.”

The mysterious presence is Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) who turns out to be a captain of a small space ship with a small crew. He believes that Neo is “The One” who has finally come to save the human population. The journey is through the eyes of Neo, who is just now discovering where few have been: the real world. It’s not a pretty picture as the scary robots feed off of us as there has been a devastating world war between the robots and the humans. The Earth has been damaged greatly.

The special effects throughout their journey are visually stunning. The viewer is pulled into the film by the excitement as the characters blend throughout the different realities. There are many battle/fight scenes where the viewer is placed in several different places as they occur. You feel just like you are there. Bending, slow motion, focusing, fast motion, and new camera techniques add to the feeling of actually experiencing the action.

The Matrix seems to have something for everyone. Science fiction fans have lots of “eye-candy” and action aficionados have plenty of electric excitement. There is plenty of hand-to-hand kung fu-type combats and shoot-outs with seemingly limitless ammunition. There is also romance, betrayal, dark humor, and a main character that can be focused on as the villain.

For me, the movie was very exciting; however, I found that there were many layers to the movie. The more I thought, the deeper the “rabbit hole” actually went. I love movies that make me think, and I got entertained at the same time. I definitely would recommend this movie. I got more than my money’s worth.
